madrid.jpgMadrid, Spain’s capital, is a cosmopolitan city. Its position as a centre for economics, finance, administration and services combines the most modern infrastructure with an important cultural and artistic heritage, the legacy of centuries of fascinating history.
Madrid is strategically located at the geographical centre of the Iberian peninsular, 646 metres above sea level. Its old town is exemplary among major European cities, and blends harmoniously with the most modern and convenient of urban infrastructure. Madrid offers a broad range of accommodation and services along with the most advanced audiovisual and communication technology. All this, combined with the momentum of a society that is dynamic and open, and at the same time warm and welcoming, has turned this metropolis into one of the western world’s great capitals.

The Madrid area has been settled since the Lower Paleolithic age, but it was not until 1561 that King Philip II made it the capital of his mighty empire. The historic old town, also known as “Madrid de las Austrias” (referring to the Hapsburg empire) is a living example of the city’s 16th and 17th century heyday, as is its impressive Plaza Mayor (square), which was opened in 1620 and remains one of Spain’s most popular and typical spots.
Near to the Plaza Mayor is the so-called “aristocratic centre” of Madrid, home to the stunning Royal Palace, a 17th century monument that combines Baroque and Classical styles. Next to the palace you can find the Plaza de Oriente (square), the Opera House and the modern Almudena Cathedral, consecrated in 1993 by Pope John Paul II. This ensemble of monuments is completed by the Puerta del Sol, a square flanked by select shops, and the “Paseo del Arte”, so called for its unique museums, palaces and gardens, not forgetting the unmistakable Bank of Spain building, the Palacio de las Telecomunicaciones (currently home to the Spanish Post Office) and the Cibeles and Neptuno fountains. In Madrid, museums and theatres have jumped on the bandwagon and now include gastronomy in their artistic offers.

At the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum, the Teatro Real, the Museo del Traje and the Reina Sofía Museum, you can enjoy more than the artistic collections, since visitors can also discover another type of art: gastronomy. These restaurants are located in the museums themselves and offer meticulous and elaborate dishes that allow diners to taste the art of the best cuisine. Source: esmadrid

It is being forged stops half-full of July the one that possibly it will be (by poster) the best festival of music in Madrid of summer.
He is not other that Summercase, an event of airlift (all groups touch a day in Madrid and another one in Barcelona) and that brings one very good selection in story to music international one talks about (I abstain to call it independent, because many of the groups are between the most sold in the average Europe).

The event at issue it celebrates to a passage of capital, in Boadilla of Mount, and has a little everything: electronics (Air, The Chemichal Brothers, DJ Shadow), old glories in capital letters (The Flaming Lips, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Jarvis Cocker, OMD), hypes of the moment (The Arcade Fire, Kaiser Chiefs, Scissor Sisters, Lilly Allen) and some that another pleasant surprise (! , everything spectacle). Madrid: A city of fun and frolic, in summer or winter

Posteado el April 16, 2007 - Categorizado en Madrid Places, Madrid Restaurants, Madrid Tourism, Madrid Tours, Madrid: Arts and Culture, Madrid: Business Tourism, Madrid: Easter Weekend, Madrid: Events, Madrid: Fashion, Madrid: Free time, Madrid: Information for the Tourist, Madrid: Neighborhoods, Madrid: Relax, Madrid: Shopping, Madrid: Strolls

Madrid has a continental climate, which means that summer and winter temperatures vary notably. During the coldest months (December, January and February), the average temperature is a little below 7 degrees centigrade (though it is not unusual, especially at sundown, for temperatures to fall below zero on some days); while in the hottest months (July and August) the average is around 25º C (or nearer 40º C some days).

Therefore, to visit Madrid during the coldest months, warm clothes are necessary; while in summer, it is best to pack light, short-sleeved clothes.
Rainfall varies considerably, but in general the climate is dry, so an umbrella is not essential. It is very rare for it to snow in the city and when it happens, the snow does not normally settle. Source: esmadrid

Posteado el April 16, 2007 - Categorizado en Madrid Places, Madrid Restaurants, Madrid Tourism, Madrid Tours, Madrid: Arts and Culture, Madrid: Business Tourism, Madrid: Easter Weekend, Madrid: Events, Madrid: Fashion, Madrid: Free time, Madrid: Information for the Tourist, Madrid: Neighborhoods, Madrid: Relax, Madrid: Shopping, Madrid: Strolls

Madrid has a Servicio de Atención al Turista Extranjero (Foreign Tourist Assistance Service, Spanish acronym SATE) that helps visitors, takes care of all procedures and provides the information that is needed should they suffer an experience of any kind that obliges them to visit a police station (lost belongings, pick pocketing, robbery, etc.)

This service is operated by a specialised team, composed by three psychologists and a philologist, who speak several foreign languages (they all speak fluent English and a second language which is either French, Japanese or Russian). Their main task is to provide foreign tourists with personal assistance regarding psychological, linguistic and legal aspects in case any incidents should occur during their stay in Madrid. Among other tasks, they are in charge of placing the report, the legal procedures, cancelling credit cards and other documents, contacting embassies and consulates or locating lost objects. The team also offer tourist information so that travellers can continue to enjoy their stay in the capital and advise tourists to prevent future incidents.

The SATE service is available at the Comisaría Centro (Central Police Station) at the Dirección General de la Policía (Leganitos, 19) and is operative every day of the week from 9 am to 10 pm 365 days a year. Source: esmadrid
